Saint Augustine   The Christian faith is often associated with "fire and brimstone" teachings of hellfire as punishment for sins committed in this life. While some people choose to reject these beliefs entirely, there are also other extremes of "spare no effort" evangelism that fail to engage their audience. The objective here is to explore fundamental questions of what The Christian faith means in relevance to our current state of the world we live in - today. To begin, a disclaimer: I am not carrying out any form of organized evangelism here; I am merely interested in exploring what it means for me personally; feel free to take what you wish however but also feel free to explore these ideas yourself. #God In contemplation of "who is God?", I corresponded with an Orthodox Christian whose point of view was that God is unknowable; while he was drawn in humility by taking such a position, he was simultaneously repelled by it as it didn't provide him much help with actually following God in his daily life (he wanted to know what God wanted him to do). I responded that (from my perspective) God is everything because He created everything but this actually shifted his approach. Before he conceptualized reality solely as created by God, relegating His role into a position behind creation (and thus removed His direct influence). By considering God as *being* everything, He thereby lays claim on everything thus eliminating dualities such as: - me vs. God - us vs. them - good vs. evil - self vs. other Indeed this raises an interesting question as to whether God pre-exists creation or rather is created through creation since fundamentally the terms being God need not necessarily imply being outside creation which leaves us with either: - God is before creation or - God is through creation I will come back to this question later in this article since it has huge consequences on our following perception of our relationship with God. #Sins / Virtues How do we have an effective relationship with Someone who we do not have much information about? This leads naturally to an exploration of sins and virtues which are basically behavior modifiers. There are rules which dictate how we should behave as well as how we should not behave which differ depending on which religion / culture you look at. The modern colloquial language however leads us away from understanding this mechanism as we tend to have strong negative associations of sins or vices (often visually represented as devils whispering in your ear) which subsequently when considered intrinsically lead us towards infrequent activities that we feel uncomfortable talking about openly such as: - Laziness - Jealousy - Lust - Gluttony - Greed - Pride - Anger The Seven Sins are not inherently evil nor are they inherently good; they're just behaviors that help categorize our interactions with our environment / other people which determines whether we're looking after ourselves in light of needed conditioning for desirable (virtuous) behavior which leads us towards contributing positively to our surroundings. Vice versa, the behavior modifiers help categorize undesirable activities that we should keep in check if we don't want to be selfish or aggressive etc. It seems that what we call sins corresponds with lack of self control and it's difficult to be kind when there is so much fear and greed around us; indeed we have enough to worry about with our own needs so who are we to be concerned about what others have or not? The scape goat culture (namely accusing "others" for having different or more than us) instead dictates that we should help others whether we know or care or not, allowing us to pass judgment based on our current state (which has become so tainted by greed that it's difficult to make out "who has more or less" just maybe we're all alike these days?). We need better rules in order to stay focused on wanting more for ourselves without being so consumed that we forget about others. Here's my take on a list of sins (rather than defaulting to something that seems immutable in any effort towards changing one's life): 1. Fear - we are afraid because we lack self assurance that our basic needs will be met; if all our needs are met (food water clothing shelter etc.) then why would we fear? If you're well fed how could you possibly feel hunger? When you dress nicely does it mean that you desire other clothes? Do you need your home to be bigger than your neighbor's? 2. Desire - if you feel desire then you somehow do not have something; do you really have want or are you just dreaming? We experience lack from time to time but this only makes us stronger; now that you know that you even have that much care we can invite you into being more concerned for others. 3. Greed - indeed wealth comes from your work but if you don't have enough then you become desperate; what would your focus be when there's no time left for anything else? The more you have the more you experience scarcity (the more you desire new things only realising that you already have enough!) which again leads to further fear; we attain satisfaction when we understand what we have; desire less so you might just find that you want nothing at all! 4. Pride - it's quite natural that we're proud of our accomplishments but it becomes a sin when we're too proud as our minds are blinded and we think we're better than others;
